Samurai Sudoku in The Washington Post
In addition to Washington Express who have been printing our Samurai Sudoku puzzles for more than a month, as of Januray 1 our puzzles will feature in The Washington Post and will appear there on a weekly basis, in the Sunday issue.
UPDATE: I have published the solution to the puzzle printed in The Washington Post. It’s on the Solutions page. We will be posting solutions for future Washington Post Samurai puzzles every Tuesday on the same page.

The Samurai Sudoku in the Washington Post was great the first couple of weeks but now seems too difficult. I have gotten a lot of people hooked on Sudoku but they are all complaining about the last 3 weeks of the Samurai Sudoku. Can you go back to a medium level in difficulty?

April 2, Washington Post sudoku has an error in the very center square. 6, 4, and 7 can’t be where they are. HELP!!

Could you please provide more details? I’m pretty sure that the puzzle is Ok and has no errors.

It is often easy to make a mistake in a Samurai puzzle which causes you to think there is a problem with the puzzle itself.

The concentration is in the large center square of the five squares.
The very center open box is a nine (it is the only missing number in that square). This results in the bottom left box of the lower center square also being a nine (since a nine appears in the center and right columns it must also appear in the left). In tat same square a seven goes in the lower right box for the same reason. This leaves two open boxes in the lower, center square that logically take a six and a four, the only missing numbers in that square. Now, moving to the top center square, a six and a four must both occupy the top left box, an impossibility.
Now, where did I go wrong?

The Samurai puzzle I’m working on has a difficulty level of Welterweight. It’s from Fri Mar 24 Wash. Post. I looked in the archives for the solution and I couldn’t find one for this date. Help! Let me know where I can look. Thank you!!

Cristina, I think you are referring to a puzzle from Washington Express, not The Post. The Post publish puzzles on Sundays, The Express on Fridays.
Unfortunately, we only post solutions to puzzles from The Post. That’s the deal.

The Samurai Sudoko in the April 23 Wash Post seemed to be missing a printed number in the lower right square. I finally finished it by guessing at one of the blank spaces. Everything came out OK - but we are not supposed to guess! Were all the needed numbers printed in the lower right hand square?

Sunday, May 14th.
I thought it was easy, everything was going great, then I hit a wall. Just so you know, I purchased 3 sunday papers, trying to figure out where I went wrong.
You should hit the wash post for some coin, cause I threw the rest of the papers away!

Hi Bob, hopefully you eventually managed too solve the puzzle. If not, feel free to ask for advice - that way you would learn better how to solve these puzzles and this problem wouldn’t happen again.

The solution you published on 11/14/06 is not related to the Samurai Sudoku in the 11/12/2006 Washington Post, i.e., the pre-printed numbers in the Post puzzle aren’t the same in your “solution” puzzle.

Samurai Sudokus in Washington Post are challenging, but lately there are Level 1 Sudokus that are too easy. Could you stick to Level 2 and 3?

I found two alternate solutions to the Upper Left corner of the Washington Post Samurai Sudoku on Sunday Nov. 11 2007. Something doesn’t make sense so I thought I’d ask. With the bottom right corner being:

Kevin, in order to find the error I need you to send me entire solutions, not just partial ones. This is clearly explained here:

So, before I can respond to your claim, I need you to send me at least two solutions for the whole puzzle, not just for one of the sub-puzzles.

Kevin, it seems that some givens are not in your solutions and that is causing you problems. Please triple-check everything again and let me know if you still think that there is an error.

I’m trying to find a solution to some Samurai puzzles published in the Washington Express paper on Fridays. (I’m not always able to obtain the paper.) Are they hidden somewhere on your website? If so (or if not), how do I get them? I really enjoy the Samurai puzzles!

Hi Laura, unfortunately the deal with the Express is not the same as with The Post.
I only show solutions for puzzles from The Post. Solutions to the puzzles from The Express are not hidden on this site, they simply are not there at all.
