The puzzle has one relatively difficult step early in the solving process but then it unfolds quite easy.

Hanjie puzzles are spreading around the world. Forlaget SuDoku, a publisher from Denmark has released a Hanjie book in which I am a co-author along with Svend Høgh. The book contains 126 Hanjie puzzles. It is published in Denmark only.

Here is another very special puzzle - it’s an odd/even Sudoku puzzle but it also has clues on top and on the side, just the same as in Hanjie puzzles.

This puzzle was provided by Clagu, our regular visitor from Korea. Thank you Clagu, it seems like a nice idea!

Here are the rules: Hanjie clues (on top and on the side) give you the arrangement of odd numbers in that particular row/column. Note that the sum of Hanjie clues for each row and column is precisely 5 - that’s how many odd numbers there are between 1 and 9. So, use those clues to mark (shade or however else you want to do it) cells that must contain ODD numbers. When you’ve done that, solve the puzzle as you would normally solve an odd/even Sudoku puzzle.

Update: The puzzle provided by Clagu was invalid in more than one way. There was a problem with the Hanjie clues which was corrected, but then it turned out that the puzzle had two solutions. Sorry folks. When I get some time I will generate one such puzzle and post it.

Puzzles are of various difficulty, but it is important to say that there are no puzzles that are too easy nor too hard.

I have just implemented a random Hanjie puzzle generator. It generates valid Hanjie (griddlers, pic-a-pix) puzzles but with random patterns - there is no pretty picture in the end! So, if you just like solving Hanjies and don’t care about the picture that you get in the end, this one is for you!

If you folks show interest in these, I may start posting Daily Hanjie puzzles (randomly generated).

Ok, this time I will show you a hanjie puzzle that is relatively straightforward until halfway through the puzzle you come to a point where you have to use one advanced solving technique. It will be explained in detail in the next few days. Until then - try to solve it yourself!
UPDATE: There is actually no need to use this “advanced” technique to solve this puzzle (altho it can be used). I missed one simple step which can be used instead. So, the puzzle is not so difficult after all. Sorry about that.

By the way, the solution is one symbol of zodiac; which one - it’s up to you to find out.

It seems like I’ve overdone it again - the first Hanjie puzzle posted a few days ago was too big according to many of the visitors!

To rectify this problem, I’m posting a smaller one - it’s a 15×15 Hanjie, relatively easy, so even those of you who are new to these puzzles should be able to solve it without too many problems.
