A randomly generated Picross puzzle (Hanjie, Griddlers…)

Filed under: hanjie (griddlers) — djape @ 11:30 am

A while ago I created a computer-generated Hanjie puzzle. I didn’t get much response from you folks, but lets try again.

The rules are same as for your ordinary Hanjies. The only difference is that randomly generated Hanjie puzzles have a random pattern as the solution, it’s not an image of anything (unless your imagination is really inspired).

If you show interest in these I might start posting them more often.

Oh, just to make things clear: The Hanjie puzzles in my book “Picross, Hanjie, Griddlers, Nonograms: 130 puzzles” ARE HAND-MADE. :)

Picross 30×30 for Monday, March 11, 2010.

The solution is here

So, what’s the verdict?

3 new books: “The Way of Samurai volume 3″, “Picross, Hanjie, Griddlers, Nonograms: 130 puzzles” and “Square Wisdom: 200 CalcuDoku puzzles, volume 2″

Filed under: CalcuDoku, General, Samurai sudoku, Sudoku Straights, hanjie (griddlers) — djape @ 11:39 pm

I’ve published 3 more books through CreateSpace: two new volumes of old books and one book that is new for Amazon. Here is what they are:

  • The Way of Samurai: 105 Samurai Sudoku puzzles, volume 3
  • Square Wisdom: 200 KenDoku puzzles, volume 2
  • Picross, Hanjie, Griddlers, Nonograms: 130 puzzles (please read below!)
  • Although first two books don’t need too much introduction, here is a brief description:

  • The Way of Samurai 3:
  • 80 classic, 20 diagonal and 5 surprise Samurai Sudokus! While all puzzles are new, one of the surprise Samurais is extra special: no such puzzle has ever been published before – it’s a Samurai Sudoku Straights puzzle.

  • Square Wisdom: 200 CalcuDoku puzzles, vol. 2:
  • Everything is exactly the same as in volume 1, except of course that the puzzles are all new.

    and finally…

  • Picross, Hanjie, Griddlers, Nonograms: 130 puzzles
  • This book is completely new for Amazon. However, I must tell you that a few of the puzzles in this book have already been printed in my LuLu book “Hanjie: 60 puzzles”. For various reason it had to be that way, primarily because of the way these puzzles are created.

These books are also available for download as e-books from LuLu:

    Happy New Year!

Filed under: General, hanjie (griddlers), hidoku, jigsaw sudoku — djape @ 2:36 pm

I hope you all had a nice Christmas and that you are enduring the cold weather well. Well, those in the Northern hemisphere anyway. :)

Let me tell you about the changes that I plan for 2009:

  • There will be more Jigsaw Sudoku puzzles on the Daily Sudoku page. They will be accompanied by the Sudoku Straights puzzles, which is something new, but I think you should learn. There will be fewer (non)consecutive puzzles – it seems they’ve gone out of fashion.
  • The “Download” page with Perfect Sudoku v0.4 is gone. That software is more than 3 years old and is way outdated. For the time being, I do not intend to release a newer version.
  • There will be a new page with daily puzzles! In fact, as of tomorrow, you will be able to download Daily Hidoku puzzles from this site! For those unfamiliar with Hidoku, check this category.
  • I intend to start creating more puzzle types: Hitori and Nurikabe are next in the queue! Stay tuned for updates.
  • I intend to publish a number of new books as well as new volumes of the old ones. Very soon a Picross (Hanjie, Griddlers, Nonograms) book is coming, followed by new volumes of the “Revenge”, Samurai, Hidoku and KenDoku. I’ll keep you posted.

That’s it for now. Have a great New Year’s Eve! Best wishes!

UPDATE: Sorry folks, for various reasons, I will start posting the daily Hidoku puzzles from around the 15th of January.

    A Hanjie-Sudoku hybrid puzzle!

Filed under: General, hanjie (griddlers) — djape @ 9:48 am

Here is another very special puzzle – it’s an odd/even Sudoku puzzle but it also has clues on top and on the side, just the same as in Hanjie puzzles.

This puzzle was provided by Clagu, our regular visitor from Korea. Thank you Clagu, it seems like a nice idea!

Here are the rules: Hanjie clues (on top and on the side) give you the arrangement of odd numbers in that particular row/column. Note that the sum of Hanjie clues for each row and column is precisely 5 – that’s how many odd numbers there are between 1 and 9. :) So, use those clues to mark (shade or however else you want to do it) cells that must contain ODD numbers. When you’ve done that, solve the puzzle as you would normally solve an odd/even Sudoku puzzle.

Update: The puzzle provided by Clagu was invalid in more than one way. There was a problem with the Hanjie clues which was corrected, but then it turned out that the puzzle had two solutions. Sorry folks. When I get some time I will generate one such puzzle and post it.

    Hanjie: 60 puzzles (volume 1) – a new PDF e-book

Filed under: hanjie (griddlers), syndication — djape @ 12:01 pm

As Hanjie puzzles are becoming more and more popular, I have decided to release an e-book with 60 of my carefully selected puzzles. All puzzles are hand-made with interesting images that are revealed after you’ve solved the puzzle. These puzzles are also known by other names: griddlers, pic-a-pix, nonograms and others.

The book is available as an e-book (PDF) or a paperback and can already be purchased on lulu.com!.

I am looking for a publisher who would be interested in publishing a more comprehensive book with my Hanjie puzzles. e-mail me if you are interested.
